Link a Station or Display with a Public Link

A public link lets you connect a visitor station, room display or wayfinder by opening one web address on the device, instead of typing a 6-digit pairing code. It's handy for screens that have no keyboard, such as a wall-mounted display. For example, you can set the link as the page your lobby screen opens, and the screen connects itself.

To turn on public links, you must be an Admin. Visitor Managers can't manage the public link for visitor stations. You also need a station, room display or wayfinder that's already set up.

Turn on the public link

  1. Click your profile in the bottom-left and go to Settings. Open Visitor Manager for visitor stations, Room Displays or Wayfinders.
  2. Click the menu (⋮) next to the station and choose Link Device, then open the Public link tab.
  3. Turn on the Public link switch. Tactic shows the link below the switch.
  4. Click Copy to copy the link, then open it in the web browser of the device you want to connect. If you open it in a browser where you're signed in to Tactic, use a private or incognito window (see below).

The Link Device window with the Public link tab open. The Public link switch is on, and the link is shown in a field with a Copy button and a Regenerate link button below it. The code at the end of the link is hidden.

When the link opens, the device connects to the station and starts as a linked station. The Pairing code tab still works the same way, so you can use either method.

Open the link in a private window if you're signed in

A device that opens the link is signed in as the station. To protect your own session, Tactic won't do this in a browser where someone is already signed in to Tactic. Instead it shows Open in a Private Window and the message "You're signed in to Tactic in this browser. Open this link in a new incognito or private window." Paste the link into a new incognito or private window to connect the device, or open it on the screen itself.

Keep the link private

Anyone who opens the link can connect a device to that station, so share it only with the people who set up your screens.

Create a new link

If the link was shared with someone who shouldn't have it, click Regenerate link and confirm with Regenerate. The old link stops working and devices that used it are signed out. Connect them again with the new link.

A confirmation window titled Regenerate public link. It says the current link will stop working and devices linked with it will be signed out, with Cancel and Regenerate buttons.

Turn the link off

Turn off the Public link switch and confirm with Disable link. The link stops working and devices that were linked with it are signed out. If you turn it on again later, Tactic shows the link for that station again.

What the device shows

What happens What it means
The device opens the station The link is valid, and the device is now linked.
Open in a Private Window Someone is signed in to Tactic in this browser. Open the link in a new incognito or private window instead.
This link is no longer valid. Ask your admin for a new one. The link was regenerated or turned off.
Couldn't link this device. Please try again. Something went wrong while connecting. Reload the page to try again.

Troubleshooting

You don't see the Public link tab. Only Admins can manage public links. If you're a Visitor Manager, ask an Admin to turn it on for the station.

The device says the link is no longer valid. The link was regenerated or turned off. Open the station's Link Device window, check that Public link is on, and copy the current link.

The link shows "Open in a Private Window". You're signed in to Tactic in that browser, and the link would replace your session. Open the link in a new incognito or private window, or on the device you're connecting.

A device was signed out. Regenerating or turning off the link signs out every device that used it. Connect the device again with the current link or a pairing code.

If you're still having trouble, contact support@gettactic.com and include a screenshot of the station's Link Device window (without the link).
