Map Builder lets your team update an interactive Tactic floor map as your workplace changes. You can move desks and rooms, change colors and desk orientation, add furniture, and adjust labels and layout elements.
Watch the 43-second overview below. It has background music and no spoken instructions; use the steps that follow for the detailed how-to.
Menu names and available controls may vary with your access and the object you select.
Open Map Builder
- In Tactic, open Map and choose the office and floor you want to edit.
- Select Open Map Builder near the bottom of the map.
- Confirm the office and floor at the top of the editor before making changes.
The editor has Layers on the left, the map canvas in the center, and the Inspector on the right. The bottom toolbar contains the selection, drawing, resource, and furniture tools. Use the zoom controls at the lower right to work on a smaller area. The hand tool pans the canvas without moving an object.
Move a desk, room, or other object
- Choose the Selection Tool (arrow) in the bottom toolbar. You can also press V.
- Select the object on the canvas, or find it under Resources or Shapes in Layers.
- Drag it to its new position. Turn on Snap or Grid at the top if you need help aligning it.
- Review its position, then save the map using one of the options below.
If an object will not move, check whether its lock icon is enabled in Layers or the floating toolbar. Use the hand tool when you want to move the view instead of an object.
Change a desk or room color
- Select the desk or room on the canvas or under Resources.
- In the Inspector, choose the Color swatch or enter a hex color value.
- For a resource, choose Reset to auto to return to its automatic color.
- Review the result and save the map.
Desk Label color changes the label text separately from the desk's map color. You can also change the selected object's color from its floating toolbar.
Change desk orientation
- Select a desk on the canvas or under Resources.
- Find Desk Orientation in the Inspector.
- Choose Top, Bottom, Left, or Right to match the floor plan.
- Review the desk on the canvas and save.
The Inspector also has Appearance and Desk Shape options when a desk is selected.
Add furniture
- Select the furniture tool (chair icon) in the bottom toolbar to open Select Furniture.
- Choose a category, such as Booths, Chairs, Couches, Items, Tables, or Stairs.
- Choose a design and place it on the canvas.
- Select the new furniture to change its Color, Width, Height, or optional text in the Inspector. Use the floating toolbar to flip it horizontally or vertically when those controls are available.
- Review its position and save.
The picker also includes Upload custom furniture if your team has its own asset.
Edit labels and appearance
Select a resource and use the Inspector to update its Desk Label, Desk Name, label position, and text styling. Desks also have resource type, active status, and highlight area settings. Check the canvas to make sure labels remain readable.
Draw shapes or update the layout
The shape menu in the bottom toolbar offers Rectangle, Circle, and Zone / Room. Draw on the canvas, then select the new object to edit it in the Inspector. Existing items appear under Shapes in Layers, where you can select, hide, or lock them. The toolbar also includes wall tools.
To import a floor plan or background, choose Import floor plan or background at the top. The available formats are Floor Plan (SVG), Background (PNG, JPG), and Legacy Map (SVG, convert). Backgrounds appear in the Backgrounds layer.
Review and save your work
- Check that desks, rooms, furniture, and labels appear where you expect.
- Review any Checks shown in Layers. For example, a check may flag desks that are not inside a space.
- Select Save, then choose an option in the Save Map window:
- Save as draft keeps the version for more editing without showing it to users.
- Save and activate now makes the version active immediately.
- Schedule activation sets a future date and time.
- Confirm the save and wait for the Saved indicator. If you activated the map, leave Map Builder and inspect the normal map view.
Use Version history at the top to inspect earlier saved versions. On Mac, ⌘Z undoes a recent edit and ⇧⌘Z redoes it. Select the keyboard icon in the bottom toolbar for more shortcuts.
